A magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck Friday in a remote area of eastern India but there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, U.S. seismologists said.
The quake was centered 50 miles east-southeast of Imphal, not far from the border with Myanmar, and 425 miles from Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta).
The U.S. Geological Survey said in a written statement the quake occurred about 55 miles underground at 8:42 p.m. Indian Standard Time.
